Tropical Architecture!

Gingerbread House

Conch Houses
An Eclectic View
I so admire gingerbread houses, whether they be in Martha's Vineyard, Key West, New Orleans or any city that is adorned with this jewelry layer of ornate woodwork. The ultimate accessory lending charm and interest to any structure!
Although I have been to Key West several times before this tiny little city always offers up new avenues of discovery. There is always something new to grasp and if I've seen it before my poor memory lends me the ability to enjoy it all over again. Enjoying the city sights with good friends a very special blessing!
Strolling the streets with my friend Judy, cameras in hand we meandered about capturing all that struck our fancy!

Hope you enjoy some of the eclectic structures that I captured!
A bit of conch house trivia:
A conch house is a style of architecture that developed in Key West, Florida in the 19th century and that was also used in Miami, and rarely elsewhere in Florida, into the early 20th century. The introduction of the conch house style is attributed to immigrants from the Bahamas.
The conch house, like other Florida vernacular architecture styles, is built of wood, and set on posts or piers, which allows air to circulate under the floor. Conch houses are rectangular, of one or two floors, and usually have a porch across the full width of the front of the house (both floors if the house has two floors). Other characteristics are horizontal weatherboarding or clapboarding, low gabled or hip roofs, and double-hung sash windows. Roofs may be metal or shingled. Conch house designs were often influenced by Classical Revival or Neoclassical architecture. Other than carved brackets and/or rafter ends on porches, conch houses generally lack ornamentation.~ Wikipedia~

This Old Truck!

Drove My Chevy To The Levy
Talk about, she's been around the block a few times! I don't know the history of this old gal but there is a story that begs to be told with each imperfection!
Can you only imagine one?
Reminds me of Don McLean's song, American Pie!
A long, long time ago
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance and maybe they'd be happy for a while
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this’ll be the day that I die......
~Don McLean~
Bet you'll be humming that little tune for the rest of the day!
I took this photo in Old Key West, Florida on a not so sunny, muggy day. Judy and I were touring the Island when we came upon this grand old beauty. She was roped off which shows clearly in the original photographs below, however, I loved her so much that I decided to clone away the rope and wooden posts. This process took me quite awhile, but so worth it! Always learning something new with this program, Photoshop never ceases to amaze me.
Happy Mother's Day!

More From Butterfly Heaven!

Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory
I added a dash of HDR to the recipe to create a more tasteful and sophisticated palette of color for the discerning viewer.
The truth of the matter is that some photos were a little blurry due to the fluttering nature of the erratic butterfly.
The HDR has somehow helped the blurries to create a more pleasing and dramatic result.
Really could not make up my mind which photos to publish so I published all of my favorites!
I hope viewing these photos has given you a few peaceful and magical moments, a transmogrification so to speak!
Seek out a butterfly garden and experience just a bit of Heaven.

Tropical Feathered Friends!

Tropical Birds, Key West, Florida
Photos were taken at The Butterfly Garden and Conservatory, Key West, Florida. These darling little tropical creatures are about the size of a pet parakeet, a couple a bit smaller.
My friend Judy and I were in butterfly heaven, one landing on my shoulder for a few short moments. Trying to photograph their fluttering behavior with our instrument of capture an interesting adventure. The tropical birds an unexpected and pleasant surprise.

Exotic flowers, textured foliage, the gentle sound of running water, multi-colored butterflies swarming our path, chirping birds, filtered light, comfortable temperatures, a sensory sanctuary, heightening our already overloaded senses, blending together creating a perfect environment for a total escape from reality.
A mere slice in time creating long term wonderful memories!

Tarpon Frenzy!

Tarpon
"There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind."~Washington Irving~These photos were taken at Robbie's Marina, Islamorada, Florida, a very touristy place where one can view and feed tarpon. We last visited Robbie's 25 years ago when my husband turned 40, it was only fitting we returned for his 65th birthday. Will, caught his first hundred plus tarpon 25 years ago while on a fishing charter, he caught a hundred plus tarpon this week in Key West, Florida. He and his buddy John, had a great time although weather conditions were not at their best. How many has he caught in between remains a mystery but each time is a very exciting event for him, fishing his passion. Catching tarpon with my camera and almost anything Mother Nature has to offer, my passion! We had a wonderful time and being with great friends made our visit a memorable experience, can't wait to return!

Ruling The Roost In Old Key West!

Hey Lady!!!
Take My Picture... Already!

OK, That's Better! I think You Got It!
We were enjoying a scrumptious and relaxing breakfast at the Blue Heaven Restaurant in Key West, Florida, when this very demanding and colorful rooster decided to join us. Subtle would not be a word to describe his commanding performance! Belting out a familiar tune, as only a rooster can do, my full attention was focused on his magnificence.
My camera did it's job as Mr. Rooster approached, posed, then quickly moved on, our breakfast resumed!
This is our sixth visit to The Conch Republic and I must say that each time I visit it is like my very first. The energy that this wonderful place possesses is like no other. A photo opportunity awaits with every turn, may it be a newly discovered secret path or beautiful little garden just waiting to be captured. Sunsets are mesmerizing, people applaud it's grandiose departure while enjoying the sights on Mallory Square, a daily celebration.
Key West, a fun place to visit, a place we will never tire of, a place where fond memories are born, always to be cherished!

A Perfect 10!

Fort Myers Beach, Florida
Fort Myers Pier
"To have special friends is a blessing but to have family as friends a special blessing!"~Rosemary Aubut~
We spent a glorious day at Fort Myers Beach, Florida yesterday. We arrived at noon and left at 10PM. The weather could not have been more perfect and the Gulf beautiful and serene. We were joined by our daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren. Gloria and Mike, my husband's sister and her husband were an additional and delightful bonus.
Four of our dear friends joined us later for dinner at a beach side restaurant.
Really! How good does it get!!!???
A band was performing in Time Square and people dancing in the streets.
No distinct sunset to photograph, cloudy, warm and humid as the evening matured, a small price to pay for wonderful memories!
