We arrived in Barcelona, Spain, May 15th, 2013. It is Wednesday, or at least according to the elevator rug, changed daily by the ship’s crew. Aft deck 7:30AM, taking my first, early morning light, photo.
It was cool, in the low sixties. I would need a light jacket for touring.
At first glance, I realized how very busy this port is. There were several large cruise ships docked and several more waiting their turn. Very industrial, by comparison to other ports we have visited.
This is a back to back cruise for us. Many passengers disembarked here and many new passengers embarked. Five hundred original passengers, crossing the Atlantic would remain aboard to Venice. We picked up 400 Australians. Rumor has it that they are party, hardy, people. Should be a riot!
We booked a tour through Holland America and were so very pleased that we did.. Millions of people inhabit this city. It is a contrast between old and new that blend nicely, if you know where you are going! We were warned by the cruise director, that Barcelona is the pick pocket capitol of Europe, surpassing Naples and Rome.
Lucky for me, my friend Judy, bought me a pouch that clips easily to my bra straps. The pouch fit, our required passports for this port, cash, ships card and my phone, in search of free wi-fi.
So now secure and secured we met our tour guide Cinda, and off we went in search of adventure. A large motor coach our transportation. I, with my newfound chest and hubby wearing his waist security pouch, hidden under his pants. I’m not touching that one!
“Where are we going” hubby asked? “Gaudi” I said! “Gowdy” he asked? Curt Gowdy??? No, no, I roared, Antino Gaudi. He is a very famous architect. “Gaudi, well he never made any fishing magazine that I have ever read!” I know he was pulling my leg, or at least I hope he was!!! Curt Gowdy, is a well known fishing expert and sports announcer.
We meandered about the city, navigating through lots of traffic, finally reaching our destination! Drum roll please!!!
Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Gaudi’s, most famous work. An extremely large cathedral dedicated to the Sacred Family. OMG! I have died and gone to heaven, I thought. The first stone was laid in 1882. Gaudi, took over the project, a year and a half year later, adding his own style and interpretation. It resembles a large drip, sand castle in a surreal kind of way. “Still under construction over 100 years later, it depends on donations for its completion. If it continues, the way it has been, in the last two good years, it should be completed in 2026,” Cinda said. It cost 15 euro pp, to enter. There are about eight thousand visitors a day! You do the math! The costs must be astronomical.
There are simply no words to describe this man’s genius. His ornate style, represents his love for nature and turning stone into the motion of water! The phrase “it’s gaudy or it looks so gaudy” is actually derived from his unique ornate style. Once inside I reached a state of nirvana. Light fractured, through the stained glass windows, illuminating the large support columns, into different shades of the rainbow. I can’t even begin to guess their height. “I am a mere child of God, and now I have seen Him,” I thought! Hubby wiped a tear from my eye.
A choir made up of woman, gathered and began to sing, I was able to record them. Their voices bounced off every facet and there melody echoed to the ceiling. Ethereal! This is unusual, Cinda said! Hey, they knew we were coming! We left humbled and grateful for the opportunity to view this magnificent structure.
We drove by other Gaudi creations and then stopped at Park Guell! This glorious work of art was designed by Gaudi for, Eusebi Guell, he was a friend and benefactor of Gaudi. The utopian collection of broken tiles, fashioned into an artistic masterpiece, is almost to much to believe, humanly possible. The park is built on the side of a mountain and had many architectural challenges for Gaudi. Admission is free, so you can only imagine the crowds.
Gaudi, was killed tragically while crossing the street by a trolly. He was left to die, dressed as a pauper, no one would take him to the hospital. He died five days later in 1926. My guess is, he was looking up and not paying attention! A very bad habit of mine, I will admit. Click, click, click!
We had a wonderful day and all of my senses are on overload! No crashing allowed! We will visit France tomorrow, I am praying that lavender is in bloom! Well goodness gracious, they know we are coming!

Cartagena, Spain

First Light...

and more embellishments...
city streets lined with cafes and great shopping...
I'm starting to develop a kink from looking up so often....
Some local color... he said no picture, until I made the money sign rubbing my fingers together...
Goodbye Cartagena...until we meet again...
Captivating...
“Cartagena, Spain, a city where fairy-tales are born.” I could only imagine a beautiful young princess by the name of Hannah, peeking out her castle window, watching many ships pass by. Her eyes the color of the Mediterranean. Her hair long, dark and wavy, alabaster skin, blushed with crushed pink marble, adorned her face. Her beauty was known far and wide, many a prince wished to win her hand. Princess Hannah, was far to ambitious for their meager proposals however, as she was studying hard. She would someday become Queen, of all the land. “THE END”
HeHe, Hannah is my beautiful grand-daughter. My fairy-tale for you sweet girl. Grandma, knows you can!
We arrived, Tuesday, May 14th, 2013. I awoke in the most beautiful harbor one could possibly imagine. It was very early, I showered and ran to the aft deck to get my first light, photo of the day.
Cartagena, is a magical city surrounded by mountains. Ancient fortresses, high atop several mountains and a castle outlined the horizon. Our floating hotel was tucked safely in an enclosed harbor. Palm trees lined the marble road, into the city. It was cool and a bit overcast, once again perfect for touring. We had not booked a tour here, as the ship would leave port at 1:00PM, the shortest stay in any port, for the entire cruise. It is less than a ten minute walk to the center of town, that is if one does not stop every minute to photograph.
Be still my heart! Mary Mother of the Archangels, Mother Nature and the genius of man have created the most beautiful city I have ever seen. Blah! Blah! Blah, Rose! I know, I know, you have read this before, when I have described other ports. This time I really mean it! Honest! How much beauty can one person possibly withstand???
I have visited Cartagena, Columbia before, on a Panama Canal cruise. I did not even know or at least remember, that there existed, Cartagena Spain.
Cartagena is a jewel, rich in antiquity and volumes of history have been written here. Words simply cannot describe what we saw or felt. I hope the pictures give you a small sense of what Cartagena, has to offer! Enjoy! Oh and yes, we will return!!!

Today is Monday, May 13, 2013. We arrived in Malaga, Spain, 7:30AM. Once again the air clear, crisp and the sun peeking through. The temperature would rise to 75 degrees, just perfect for touring. We are officially in the the Mediterranean and it is all and more, than I expected. Malaga is the fifth largest city in Spain. Malaga dates back to 770B.C., discovered by the Phoenicians The climate is subtropical and it is a very busy seaport. It is also the birth place of Pablo Picasso. Malaga is a city rich in antiquity and I could write volumes about it’s beauty. Neat and clean and it’s people very friendly.

We booked a tour through Holland America and promptly left the dock at 9:30AM. We are now six hours  ahead of EST.

There were about forty of us on a large luxury motor coach. The coach had electric shades on the front windows and plush and comfy seats. Antonio, was our driver and LuLu, our guide. She was a very upbeat and knowledgeable woman. We were greeted with a big smile and she shouted out, Hola! Hola amiga, I responded! That about limits my Spanish!!!

We first visited a bull fighting arena. It is still legal to bullfight here and there are several shows a year. Traditions and history of the sport are very interesting. “There is a very strong emotional connection between the matador and the bull,” LuLu said.
We met Sergio, a young matador in training. He is twenty two years old and has fought a four year old bull, which means he has gained experience. Bulls at age four, are killed and harvested for food. LuLu explained that the meat is more tender because the bull is killed quickly by the matador. Sergio showed us some of his moves and finally the kill! If a matador does a good job he is then given one ear of the bull. If he does a really good job and kills the bull on the first strike he is given two. The crowd and the president decide, which. They scream Ole! Ole! Bullfighting is a very dangerous sport and there is an average of two major accidents a year. There is actually a surgical team on staff here. So don’t try this one at home kids!
We then attended another Flamenco show. This show was far more professional than the last show, we saw in Cadiz. The “sole” of Spain, I call it. The deafening tapping of the shoes entered my soul, opened my heart and lifted my spirit. You can’t help but feel it. Flamenco is a very passionate and elegant tradition. It is very much a dance of emotion and improvisation! A dancer feels the beat and then decides on the step he or she will perform. Flamenco is actually a combination of three different cultures, Arab, Indian and Spanish. Flamenco was born out of poverty, many people were destitute, they had there legs to dance and their voices to sing, both were free and Flamenco was born. We loved the show and the four entertainers got a standing ovation.
Visiting the Cathedral of Malaga, was truly an experience. It is said that it took 250 years to build. It is only opened, if the Pope visits and sometimes during lent. Designed  in ornate Renaissance style.
A fourth and final stop, we drove to the highest point in the city. It is called, Mountain of The Lighthouse. A large fort greeted us and panoramic views could be enjoyed from almost any turn. It resembled an old castle and had been partially destroyed by Napoleon’s army. There were beautiful gardens here and it looked like a scene from a story book. There was a bit of a climb and I would not recommend this tour to anyone who has trouble walking, although some gave it a try. There was, however, a seating area not far from the bus.
Well folks, here again, is another city I would love to visit again!!! Hmmmm, maybe I’ll just have to do this cruise again next year!!! OlĂ©!!! OlĂ©!!! Might be too early to let hubby in on my thoughts!!! Let’s keep it a secret!

Lessons learned: It is so wonderful to make one’s dreams a reality! “Never want to say, I should have, while I can.”
Wisdom: Life is too short, why waste a moment. Trite but o so true!!!

Mother Nature, was definitely having a menopausal moment, over the last couple of days! She rocked and rolled all the way from Ponta Delgada, Azores to Cadiz, Spain. Sustaining 48MPH winds, accompanied by 18 to 20ft. seas. The Nieuw Amsterdam, handled the conditions with dignity and grace. Listing at times, my sea worthy, thick legs, kept me well balanced. Hubby and I are very fortunate and have always survived rough waters, in more ways than one! We will be celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary in just a couple of weeks!
We arrived in Cadiz about 7:30AM, May 12, 2013. It was Mother’s Day! The sun was rising in the east and the day looked promising. The temperature would rise to 77 degrees and the waters were finally tame.
We had booked a walking tour through Holland America. A short ride into the center of Cadiz, we then exited the bus, near a lovely beach. Charo, our guide, explained the area and some of it’s history. Cadiz is a beautiful city rich in antiquity and architecture. It is located on the southern coast of Spain on the Atlantic. We will be passing by the Rock of Gibraltar about 2AM, Monday. Definitely won’t see it this time around!
Visiting the magnificent Cadiz Cathedral, filled with priceless art, we were in awe. It took one hundred and sixteen years to build. There are 136 churches in Cadiz, according to Charo! Many of the buildings here, are built from oyster stone and are embellished with pink and black marble.
It was Sunday and we were very lucky to hear many church bells ringing. Families were out and about, eating at many of the local outside cafes. Children, all dressed in their Sunday best for Mass. Some of the children were receiving first communion and others being baptized. Spain is a very religious country, deeply rooted in Catholicism!
We then attended a Flamenco Show at mid day, enjoying tapas and a glass of Spanish, red wine. My wish came true, and hubby was picked to learn traditional Flamenco. Hysterical, because I knew what was coming! Remember he is “The King Of The Chicken Dance.” When not sure of a step, he begins to flap his arms and click his fingers naturally, and he did just that. His excuse, he didn’t have on hard soled shoes!!!
Cadiz is a magical place and I was so honored to visit here! Yes, it was a beautiful and extremely memorable day! I could spend a great deal of time here and maybe some day I will...

Our Journey!

Our Trip
We embark upon our journey and trip of lifetime in just a few days. Celebrating a landmark anniversary and a milestone birthday for me. Our trip has been in the planning stages for some time now and we are looking forward to the excursion! It is too early to say that I am excited, as I am still caught up in the details. Fears vanishing, I am sure, as soon as I place one foot aboard ship. We will be visiting, Portugal, Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Greece and Croatia by cruise ship. Followed by a two-week land tour of Italy! Six weeks total, visiting places I have romanticized about for many years. Who would have thunk it??? Little old me and the hubster, embracing the great masters and all the genius that Europe has to offer. Our home in Florida, lived in for the summer by some friends. Once our journey is complete, we will fly back to Boston and spend the summer in Massachusetts, visiting with our children. Many of our friends have asked to see our pictures upon our return to Florida, in September!
Be careful what you wish for PEOPLE!
It will be interesting to see how many thousands of photos, I will capture. I will try to blog and post when I can. I hear that the internet service is slow aboard ship and patience is definitely not one of my virtues. Then relying on hotel and cafĂ© wi-fi in the last leg of our trip. Above is a photo of the husband, opening a birthday/anniversary card from our friends Larry and Linda. When opened it plays the chicken dance. Hysterical because hubby is "The King of the Chicken Dance".
If you follow my blog you know that, the man, can adapt this phenomena to any song.
Hmmmm, I wonder if he can customize it to the Flamenco.
Now try to get that image out of your head! Que pase un buen dĂa! (Have a nice day!)
Now. how you say...where is the bathroom???
